Veeam Backup & Replication supports software-defined storage technology. This mechanism can also be used for troubleshooting or testing patches and upgrades. During the verification, the VM image remains in a read-only state. The program starts a VM directly from a backup or replica in the isolated test environment and runs tests against it.

Additionally, there is an option to perform active full and synthetic full backups. The available backup methods include forward incremental-forever backup, forward incremental backup, and reverse incremental backup. Backup increments are created using the built-in changed block tracking (CBT) mechanism. Backups can be full (a full copy of VM image) or incremental (saving only the changed blocks of data since the last backup job run). It backs up VMs at the image-level using a hypervisor's snapshots to retrieve VM data.

Thank God Windows didn't let you format that LUN. Heck, even backing them up to an external USB drive would be better than what it appears your trying to do. If you've dedicated your entire NAS storage to an iSCSI lun and that lun is a VM datastore then you need to find another place for your backups. If your dead set on storing backups on the NAS, why not just setup an NFS share on the NAS and backup to that. So all the vm's are on the datastore from the server, and is backupped (by ghettovcb) to the nas-datastore.Īdditionally, do you really want your backup traffic on the same network as your VM traffic? Who says I run VM's on the datastore on the nas? :) I use the nas-datastore as backup/software datastore.

I would strongly urge you to put the backups somewhere else. You'd be storing your VM's in the same place as the backups - Note that if you have your VM's on the same location/storage array as your backups and you lose that storage array then you've lost your VM's AND your backups.
